The number of women-owned businesses in Wisconsin increased by about 27 percent from 2007 to 2016, but the state still ranks 38th nationally in number of female-owned firms.
Wisconsin has about 142,400 women-owned businesses, up from 112,418 in 2007. But it still pales in comparison to No. 1 ranked California, which has 1.4 million female-owned firms, according to the 2016 State of Women-Owned Businesses report from American Express OPEN released this month.
There are about 167,800 employees supported by women-owned firms in Wisconsin, up 10 percent from 152,833 in 2007. And those firms reported about $26.9 billion in sales in 2016, up 29 percent from $20.9 billion in 2007.
Milwaukee specifically has 44,200 women-owned businesses, up 36 percent from 32,479 in 2007. The city ranks 30th among the top 50 metropolitan areas in number of female-owned firms.
Those woman-owned Milwaukee companies employ 49,900 people, up from 45,502 in 2007. And their revenue totals $6.6 billion, up 22 percent from $5.4 billion in 2007.
