“It is with great sadness that we have to inform everyone that Weissgerber’s Gasthaus will be closing its doors for the final time at the end of Saturday June 25, 2016,” according to a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page. “We want to thank all of our loyal guests for 33 years of business.”

The future of the German restaurant has been in question since the city plan commission considered a proposal in April to demolish the restaurant at 2720 N. Grandview Blvd. and build a strip mall in its place.

That proposal, by CFT Developments LLC., which is registered to Rosemead, Calif.-based Panda Restaurant Group, owner of Panda Express Restaurant, was denied based on a number of concerns that city officials had. The proposal included a 9,800-square-foot multi-tenant retail and restaurant building at 2720 N. Grandview Blvd. with three small restaurant spaces and three small retails spaces. It also included a stand-alone Panda Express building.

In April, Hans Weissgerber Jr., owner of the Gasthaus Restaurant, said owning and managing the property had become extremely difficult since his brother, Jack, who was his business partner, died in 2013.

“Unfortunately, while my family and I would prefer to continue operating the Gasthaus, either ‘as-is,’ or as a new concept, failure to reach a settlement with Jack’s estate left us no choice but to consider a sale of the property,” Hans Weissgerber said in an April statement.

Weissgerber and city of Waukesha officials could not immediately be reached for comment Monday.
