Home Industries Weekly Profile: Jon Scholz

Weekly Profile: Jon Scholz

Senior vice president of project management, CG Schmidt Inc.

Company: CG Schmidt Inc.
Title: Senior vice president of project management
Education: Bachelor’s degree in science, industrial technology/building construction, from the University of Wisconsin-Stout
Family: Wife, Joan; son, Dustin, 22; daughters, Erica, 20 and Emily, 19
City of residence: Cedarburg
Hobbies: "Renovating my house, hunting and fishing."
What are you working on? "Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital’s 80,000-square-foot renovation and 44,000-square-foot addition, budgeted at $37 million, and the new $19 million physician center at Hwy 67 and I-94; Menomonee Falls High School’s addition and remodel; Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare’s 300,000 square-foot facility in Franklin; Marquette University High School’s $12.5 million improvements project; and Lake Country Lutheran High School’s new campus in Hartland."
How does the market look to you? "The markets I am directly involved with – those being health care and education, are seeing steady growth right now. Several referendums passed in November, and I anticipate several more to pass in April. Corporate and industrial markets are seeing considerable growth as well, as large companies like Bucyrus International Inc. continue to strengthen their roots here in Milwaukee. Our new office in Madison provides the pre-construction services that the rapidly growing area needs."
What was the best deal you’ve ever been involved in? "My wife agreeing to marry me was a pretty good deal for me. Career-wise, being involved with the emotionally charged Kathy Hospice project on the St. Joseph’s Hospital campus in West Bend. I witnessed Ron Komas, the husband of Kathy Komas, who the hospice is dedicated to, command a crowd of citizens and decision makers, to make them realize how vital quality health care is to the well-being of the community. It was truly an honor to be able to create this facility for Ron and his wife, and the many patients and their families who would spend time there." (Editor’s note: Ron Komas was named a Health Care Hero by Small Business Times in December.)
What was the funniest moment of your career? "The St. Joe’s West Bend project team and I visited the architect’s office in Nashville. Upon arrival, we all got into a minivan cab to take us from the airport to the hotel. When we got in, the cabbie announced that it was our lucky day, as he was the singing cabbie. He proceeded to play the guitar and sing ‘Freebird’ while driving us to the hotel with his knees. Quite a memorable ride."
