Waukesha County has sold its shuttered recycling facility to a Franksville-based dumpster rental and waste management services company for $1.1 million.
Sorce Services LLC., purchased the 1 acre property at 220 S. Prairie Ave. on Sept. 10. The building has not been in use since March when Waukesha County entered into a joint business agreement with the City of Milwaukee on a collaborative recycling program.
ReCommunity Recycling of Waukesha is the private contractor for recycling for the city of Milwaukee and Waukesha County. The two municipalities jointly purchased a state-of-the art recycling facility at 1401 Mount Vernon Ave. in the Menomonee Valley earlier this year.
The new recycling center has the ability to run 35 tons per hour and does a max business of 60,000 tons per year, said Rebecca Mattano, Waukesha County solid waste supervisor.
By combining services, Waukesha County is saving over $500,000 per year in operating costs, Mattano said.
Without the partnership it would have taken Waukesha County 50 years to make back an investment in the Prairie Avenue facility. By collaborating, the return on investment is 12 years, said Dale Shaver, director of the Waukesha County Department of Parks & Land Use.
