Since late July, the City of Milwaukee has issued warnings and citations to 51 businesses for violating reopening orders aimed at reducing the impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The businesses were warned after the city received complaints of non-compliance with the local mask ordinance, capacity limits or lack of physical distancing. An initial complaint is followed up with a phone call to discuss the city's requirements and challenges the operator is facing to gain compliance, as well as an on-site inspection. A warning letter is mailed if the operator to be in violation. Repeated complaints result in an additional inspection and citation. The city provided the following list of businesses that have received warnings as of Sept. 18:

Milwaukee is currently in its eighth week of Phase 4.1 of the 'Moving Milwaukee Forward' public health and business reopening plan, which requires businesses to enforce the citywide mask order and some to limit indoor capacity. Under Phase 4.1, bars and restaurants were required to submit a COVID-19 safety plan to the city Health Department by Sept. 15, in order to continue in-person dining service both indoors and outdoors. As of Sept. 18, the city had received a total of 770 plans and had approved 200, with the remainder under review. Once a business has been approved, the operator will receive a certificate or seal from the Milwaukee Health Department indicating that they may operate safely, according to a news release.
