To advance its support of victims impacted by domestic abuse, Verizon Wireless has committed $25,000 to Sojourner Family Peace Center’s Community Domestic Abuse Advocacy Program.
Verizon distributed grant dollars through its HopeLine initiative, which donates funds and wireless phones to victims of domestic abuse as they work to rebuild their lives.
The recent grant boosts the technology retailer’s relationship with Sojourner Family Peace Center, a Milwaukee-based nonprofit organization that provides services and support to those affected by family violence.
The organization’s Community Domestic Abuse Advocacy Program gives tablets to participating advocates so that they can immediately help victims connect with the Milwaukee Police Department.
“They started this program, and we were able to see that they were getting results,” said Andrea Meyer, PR manager at Verizon Wireless Illinois/Wisconsin region.
“They already showed and demonstrated their ability work with other organizations and be successful,” Meyer said.
Additionally, grant dollars will funnel into the center’s Life Skills program, which trains victims of family violence in job readiness, interviewing, credit scores and financial empowerment.
“Corporate support is vital to Sojourner’s ability to meet the needs of those in our community affected by domestic violence,” said Carmen Pitre, executive director of the Sojourner Family Peace Center. “Verizon Wireless is helping ensure the critical services we provide are available for women and children trapped in violent situations.”
