Veolia Water gives teachers tools for science experiments

Veolia Water Milwaukee is collaborating with Milwaukee Public Schools to teach fifth-grade students about water and the environment using a Water Box curriculum package.

The company, which runs the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District’s Jones Island and South Shore sewage treatment plants, will likely donate up to 200 of the curriculum package kits to area teachers.
After Veolia Water Milwaukee and MPS succeeded with the curriculum package during the 2011-2012 school year, it is now being offered to more Milwaukee county school systems for the upcoming school year.
The Water Boxes contain science lab equipment, sample liquids like alum and soap, and sample solids like sand and gravel. With the kits, teachers can conduct up to 25 experiments involving topics such as evaporation, viscosity and water hardness.
Teachers participating in the Water Box program will receive curriculum training throughout the year. Supplemental materials such as a poster of the Natural Water Cycle and a CD with instructions for experiments are also included with the kit.
