UWM, Voces receive federal training grants

Two Wisconsin organizations are among the 77 receiving grants to provide workplace health and safety training grants from the U.S. Department of Labor.

The University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee will receive $139,987 to provide a 12-hour train-the-trainer program on ergonomic and safety hazard prevention in the green energy power-generation industry sector. The target audience includes utility employees, contractors, safety professionals and management.

Voces de la Frontera is receiving $140,000 to provide 1-hour ergonomics introduction, 2-hour ergonomic hazards, and 7.5-hour ergonomic hazards train-the-trainer programs to workers in high hazard industries. The target audience includes non-English/limited English speaking workers and training will be presented in English, Spanish, Hmong and Polish.

The Susan Harwood Training Grant Program awards funding to a variety of nonprofits for training on the recognition, avoidance, and prevention of safety and health hazards in their workplaces. A total of $10.5 million is being awarded in fiscal 2016.

“Education and training help employers keep our nation’s workers safe and healthy, especially in high-hazard industries,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez. “Organizations receiving the Susan Harwood Training Grants we are awarding today help employees and employers create safer, healthier workplaces.”
