UWM names Mone chancellor

The board of regents of the University of Wisconsin System today named Mark Mone, Ph.D., the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s ninth chancellor, following a national search for a new leader.

Mone was appointed interim chancellor of UW-Milwaukee in April after the university’s previous chancellor, Michael Lovell, Ph.D., announced he would become the first lay president of Marquette University, just miles away.

A 27-member search and screen committee assembled in May led the hunt for a new chancellor and narrowed its search to three finalists. In addition to Mone, finalists were Gail Hackett, Ph.D., provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs at University of Missouri-Kansas City; and William Mike Sherman, Ph.D., senior vice president, provost and chief operating officer of University of Akron.

Each finalist visited campus – Mone in November and the others in December – and held public forums with UWM’s community.

Each finalist was then interviewed by UW System president Ray Cross, regent president Michael Falbo and the regent selection committee on Dec. 10.

Mone’s appointment as chancellor is effective immediately, according to an announcement from the UW board of regents. In his new role, he will earn $340,000.

“We are very pleased to look to one of our own bright talents, Dr. Mark Mone, as the committee’s choice to lead this university into the future,” Falbo said in a statement. “His academic experience and expertise in building relationships with businesses, governments, and communities are a great fit with the university’s commitment to quality, access, and economic development.”

Mone is a longtime faculty member of UW-Milwaukee, having joined the faculty in 1989. He has served as a professor of management in the Lubar School of Business and was associate dean for Executive Education & Business Engagement for more than 15 years.

For the past two years, Mone has also been functioning as the chancellor’s designee for strategic planning and campus climate, a role in which he focuses on devising the school’s 2020 strategic plan as well as developing programs to enhance the campus’ organizational climate.

Mone’s teaching experience includes leading courses and workshops in managing people, team building and communication as well as behavioral research methods and human resource management. Prior to joining UWM, he spent five years teaching organizational behavior and strategic management in the College of Business and Economics at Washington State University. He has also taught at HotelConsult in Le Bouveret, Switzerland.

In a statement, Mone said he is “honored and privileged” to serve the university community as chancellor.

“UW-Milwaukee is a vitally important academic institution with an impressive alumni base, strong research profile, and deep community engagements,” he said. “I look forward to working with our leadership to build on our past accomplishments, knowing that even greater things are ahead for this campus and community.”

Mone’s career took flight in hospitality and food service. He devoted more than a decade to management roles in the industry and opening and managed hotels across the western United States before his transition into academia.

Mone holds a Ph.D. in management (organizational behavior and organization theory) from Washington State University, a master of business administration degree from Idaho State University and a bachelor’s degree in organizational management from Central Washington University.
