Milwaukee city officials are planning to build an operations and maintenance facility near the downtown Intermodal Station to repair and store the city’s streetcars.
The 15,400-square-foot streetcar repair and storage facility, to be located at 450 N. 5th St, will cost between $6 million and $8 million and is part of the overall $124 million downtown streetcar project. It will be open 24/7 and employ between 20 and 24 people, according to an application submitted to the Board of Zoning Appeals, which will review the plan Nov. 10.
Riders of the Milwaukee Streetcar will not board vehicles at this location. Streetcar riders will board at a planned stop at the northwest corner of 4th Street and St. Paul Avenue.
Work continues on the infrastructure for the Milwaukee Streetcar. Phase one is slated to begin serving riders in 2018 with the Lakefront Line Extension launching service in 2019.
