The Village of Shorewood recently launched a social media campaign by creating a profile page on Twitter and a Village of Shorewood Facebook Page.
“The challenge that we have that I think all suburban governments are having is finding a way to talk to our residents,” said Keith Schmitz, village spokesperson. “The problem with local newspapers getting smaller and disappearing has made it tougher and tougher to reach out to our residents and so we have been looking for other options on how to do that.”
According to Schmitz, residents of Shorewood are internet savvy and have been using web sites like the village manager’s weekly newsletter to get information.
“We had been weighing our options and it seemed like the next best step,” Schmitz said.
“We are open to whatever media is available to reach both the residents and business owners within the village, along with anyone interested about what is going on in Shorewood,” said village manager Chris Swartz. “Additionally, we know that younger people are major users of social media and this will be a unique opportunity to make village government more inclusive.”
