Sendik’s supports honor flight with $180,000 donation

Backed by its customer base, area grocer Sendik’s Food Markets raised $180,000 toward the Stars & Stripes Honor Flight, which salutes local veterans for their service and brings them to Washington, D.C., to visit memorials.

Sendik’s tapped customers for donations through a charity campaign that ran May 1-July 31.

The grocer announced its fundraising total and made a special check presentation on Aug. 7 in Mequon. Funds will enable 180 veterans to travel to the nation’s capital in October. Veterans will be guaranteed a one-day, all expenses paid trip to check out the memorials while also being praised for their military contributions. The flight, scheduled for Oct. 24, will be named after Sendik’s for its generosity.

“This is all about our loyal customers and their wonderful hearts,” Sendik’s Family co-owner Ted Balistreri said in a press release. “It’s incredible that their support has made it possible to provide this gift to 180 local veterans. We are proud to sponsor this trip as a way of showing our gratitude to local heroes for all they have done for our country. We hope it’s a wonderful, unforgettable experience.”
