North Carolina-based Self-Help Credit Union will open a branch at 3340 S. 27th St. in Milwaukee next year.
The new branch will be the credit union’s second location in Milwaukee with its one and only branch in the state located at 2102 W. Fond Du Lac Ave. The new location is slated to open at the beginning of 2020, said Jenny Shields, Self-Help Credit Union director of media relations.
“We’re under renovation right now and in the process of raising staff,” Shields said.
Self-Help Credit Union focuses on providing financial products to underserved communities. The credit union identified the south side of Milwaukee as a central part of the city in need of banking services, Shields said.
Bank Mutual previously occupied the building, which Self-Help Credit Union purchased for $975,000 from ENDF3DK LLC, an affiliate of Endeavor Corp., according to state records.
The building was previously sold to ENDF3DK LLC by Associated Banc-Corp., who closed the branch after its acquisition of Bank Mutual Corp.
Self-Help is a family of five nonprofit organizations including Center for Community Self-Help, Self-Help Credit Union, Self-Help Federal Credit Union, Self-Help Ventures Fund and Center for Responsible Lending, according to the organization’s website.
The organization was founded in 1983 and is a member-owned, federally insured, chartered credit union based in Durham, North Carolina. Between Self-Help Credit Union and its federal credit union, the organization has 57 branches across the United States and serves 70,000 members with more than $2 billion in assets.
