After years of silence, construction has been humming at The Couture project site for much of 2021.

Milwaukee-based Barrett Lo Visionary Development, the developer of the roughly $190 million high-rise, commenced construction in May.

Barrett Lo recently gave reporters a tour of the construction site. Crews reached the bottom of the hole they were digging, and are continuing to remove sediment. They are now driving piles and performing other work in advance of vertical construction next year.

“The Couture’s construction teams have made incredible progress on site, having recently reached the bottom of the hole,” Rick Barrett, founder and chief executive officer of Barrett Lo, said in a statement. “We are now in the process of pile driving, and will follow that process by erecting a tower crane in early 2022 before beginning vertical construction.”

The latest progress photos, included in the below slideshow, come from Madison-based general contractor J.H. Findorff & Son Inc.

Once fully built, The Couture will stand 44 stories tall. It will contain 322 residential units, 42,000 square feet of commercial space, a transit center and public park space.

One possible commercial tenant is downtown steakhouse Carnevor. The restaurant’s owner, Omar Shaikh, recently revealed he is exploring his options for a new location. The Couture is among those options.
