School uniform company plans to build headquarters in Oak Creek

Global Schoolwear, a national school uniform distributor, wants to build a new 75,000-square-foot building within the OakView Business Park in Oak Creek that would serve as the company’s new headquarters.

Documents submitted to the Oak Creek Plan Commission show that the company is planning to relocate and consolidate their warehouse operations and headquarters within an industrial building to be built at 200 W. Oakview Parkway. The 8.2-acre site is currently vacant.

The company’s warehouse operations are currently being completed at a facility in Downers Grove, Illinois while the its current headquarters is located at 7804 Harwood Ave. in Wauwatosa.

Global Schoolwear provides tailoring, embroidery and heat press options to customize each order they receive.

At the proposed Oak Creek headquarters facility, an estimated 60 people would be working during peak times, from June through September. Approximately 20 to 25 people would work at the site during the rest of the year.

The site plan also provides for a 60,000-square-foot expansion to the north of the building that could be built in the future.

There are wetlands located on the property to the north, so Global Schoolwear is working with the Department of Natural Resources to gain the needed wetland permits. However, Plan Commission documents cast some doubt as to whether those permits will be obtained.

“The DNR has provided comments to suggest that they will either not approve of the request or require significant amendments to the proposed plans prior to issuing their approvals,” a Plan Commission report says.

During the June 14 Plan Commission meeting, members decided to table voting on the building proposal until a final decision comes back from the DNR.
