The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will host a grand opening for its School of Freshwater Sciences on Friday, Sept. 12, from 5 to 9 p.m.
The school is located along Milwaukee’s inner harbor, at 600 E. Greenfield Ave. A program and building dedication will be held at 5:30 p.m.
The event will, “Freshwater Odyssey,” will celebrate the state-of-the-art facility with entertainment, drinks and appetizers. Attendees are encouraged to dress in shades of freshwater. Cost is $50.
On Saturday, Sept. 13, the School of Freshwater Sciences will host a free community event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with tours, science demonstrations, entertainment and food vendors.

The 92,600-square-foot building, which cost about $36 million, was constructed adjacent to the Great Lakes Water Institute to provide multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research space, core facilities, collaborative space and teaching and instructional spaces. The addition will house the Center for Water Policy, Great Lakes Genomics Center, laboratories for researchers and students, classrooms, quarantine facilities to allow research students to acquire aquatic organisms from the Great Lakes, and will serve as a substantial expansion of the School of Freshwater Sciences aquaculture labs.
