Matt Miller, president of Belgium, Wis.-based K2 Sourcing, started playing guitar when he was 12. He joined a band in college, but now finds that writing his own music is what he enjoys most about being a musician.
“I’ve been playing for as long as I can remember, but unlike a lot of musicians performing was never my favorite part about it,” Miller said. “(Writing songs is) relaxing to me. I really enjoy just picking up my guitar and escaping every once in a while.”
Miller writes a lot of blues and rock and roll melodies, but is also familiar with classical guitar from his college days.
He has an electric and an acoustic guitar hanging on the wall of his office.
“It’s nice to be able to just walk over and pick one up whenever I feel like it,” he said. “It’s a freeing feeling and I enjoy the opportunity to clear my mind sometimes.”
Miller practices at least three to four times a week and usually writes down the songs he writes until he has an opportunity to bring them back to a band to do a full recording.
“Every once in a while I get together with the old members of my college band,” he said. “We continue to play and we’ll pick up one of my new songs and let the bass and the drums lay their lines over what I’ve written. It’s a pretty great experience.”
Miller was a member of a four-piece band in college. Three of those original members still get together on occasion.
“The guy who isn’t here was our lead vocalist, so we’ve had to deal with that,” he said. “We’ve learned first-hand why some people are lead singers and others are back up singers, but it’s still fun and I enjoy the music and hanging out with the guys.”
