The city of Milwaukee has received a $235,000 grant to support a planned new park in the city’s Century City Triangle Neighborhood.
The funding from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Local Assistance Program will support the development of a planned $1.1 million park at 2900 W. Hopkins St. The project is part of the MKE Plays initiative, which launched five years ago in an effort to rehabilitate playgrounds across the city.
The proposed park has also received $350,000 in grant funding from the Milwaukee-based Burke Foundation and $165,000 from the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District.
Another pending grant application would provide an additional $105,000, and the remaining costs would be paid for by the city.
“I want to thank the funders who have contributed to this project, and all of the MKE Plays rehabilitations over the last five years,” said Ald. Michael Murphy. “Having well-maintained parks and play spaces helps support neighborhoods across the city, and this new and improved space will be a valuable community and neighborhood asset for all to enjoy.”
Current plans for the park, which were developed with feedback from community members, include green infrastructure, nature-based play options, a multi-purpose court and field space and a covered gathering/event space. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2021.
“It takes a neighborhood effort to make a project like this a success, and to this point the engagement among neighbors has been outstanding,” said Ald. Khalif Rainey. “The rehabilitated park will be a source of pride, fun and relaxation for everyone to enjoy.”
