Phoenix Products Company Inc., a Milwaukee-based designer and manufacturer of lighting fixtures, recently introduced what it calls its “brightest idea yet.”

Called the EcoMod 450, the new fixture is the latest edition to Phoenix’s EcoMod Series of LED floodlights – a series specifically engineered to meet the demands of the world’s harshest applications. What sets the 450-watt fixture apart, however, is its output of up to 41,250 lumens.

In comparison, a standard 25-watt incandescent lightbulb typically used in homes emits approximately 200 lumens.

The 41,250-lumen output is the highest in the EcoMod Series. The other two designs in the series – one a 150-watt fixture and the other a 300-watt – have outputs of 13,750 lumens and 27,500 lumens, respectively.

With its output, the EcoMod 450 replaces HID (high-intensity discharge) floodlights of up to 1,500 watts.

“It’s a highly efficient, state-of-the-art fixture that gives more light while using less energy,” said marketing manager Melissa Stephany.

The EcoMod 450 is also versatile, according to Stephany, because it offers seven unique optic options ranging from wide flood to very narrow spot optics.

Twenty percent of Phoenix’s office employees are engineers, and Stephany said new product development is always a strong focus for the company since the lighting industry is ever-evolving.

Phoenix, which serves industries including mining, marine and material handling, developed the EcoMod 450 in the same way it does all of its products, which is to consider the worst-case scenarios.

“Our lighting fixtures are used in the world’s harshest environments,” Stephany said.  “If they need to withstand the high shock and vibration of mining equipment or the corrosive marine environment, every component needs to be considered.”

While Phoenix takes its commitment to durability seriously, Stephany said it is not afraid to have a little fun as well. For example, its employees have dropped the fixtures off 200-foot cranes, dumped thousands of gallons of water on them and used them like baseball bats, all in an effort to prove their durability.

In fact, Phoenix took the EcoMod 450 into a batting cage and launched hardballs at it. It came out without a dent.

Like the others in the EcoMod Series, the EcoMod 450 utilizes Phoenix’s exclusive EcoVent Technology that extends the life of the fixture by allowing heat, water and debris to flow between the modules.

“Most importantly, it allows air to flow between the modules, keeping the LEDs cooler, thus preserving the lifespan of the fixture,” said Stephany, who added that the EcoMod Series uses up to 70 percent less energy when compared to equivalent HID floodlights.
