Brewer Melvin and his wife raise $100,000 for Komen
Doug Melvin, executive vice president and general manager for the Milwaukee Brewers, and his wife Ellen have raised $100,000 for the southeastern Wisconsin affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
The pair hosted a series of event to build awareness and raise funds for breast cancer research. The events were all held under the “Step Up to the Plate” mantra and included “The Pink Tie Guy” event, the Step Up to the Plate fundraising event at Miller Park, and two in-game Brewers jersey raffles. The family made a personal contribution of $15,000. The Brewers Community Foundation and Brewers principal owners Mark and Debbie Attanasio also contributed to the fund.
In five seasons, the Melvins’ personal fundraising efforts have brought in more than $230,000 in support of the programs of the Southeast Wisconsin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The Melvin family began the Step Up to the Plate fundraising events in memory of Ellen’s mother, Elsie Schultz, who died of breast cancer 19 years ago.
Funds Presented to Wisconsin Parkinson Association
The Wisconsin Parkinson Association recently received a $6500 donation check from the organizers of the Kenny’s Kettle Moraine Walk and Run for Parkinson’s. The money will be used for community outreach and education.
“This is wonderful,” said Jay Blankenship, executive director of the association. ” (The money) will help so much and allow us to continue our services throughout Wisconsin and in connecting states.”
Kenny’s Walk/Run was held earlier this year on the Kettle Moraine State Trail near Sportsman’s Park in Dundee. The walk/run is dedicated to Kenny Schneider, a long-time resident of Dundee, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s some years ago and continues to live and work in the area.
United Way offers help to those with urgent needs
United Way of Greater Milwaukee recently awarded nearly $50,000 in Urgent Need Grants to three local organizations.
“The money we raised in 2009 helps us quickly respond the needs in our community. But the truth is that we really need more dollars directed to United Way to use for the greatest, most pressing needs to continue to respond efficiently and effectively,” said Mary Lou Young, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Milwaukee. “This year’s Community Campaign provides an opportunity for all of us to help increase United Way’s ability to support its 160-plus partner programs and still respond to emerging and critical needs.”
The Guest House of Milwaukee’s Guest House Counseling Clinic received a $25,000 urgent need grant to help the organization with the substance abuse and mental health treatmentof Milwaukee’s homeless population. A temporary reduction in funding caused a substantial shortfall for 2010 and left the clinic without a counseling staff position. The grant will allow the clinic to better serve clients in need of treatment.
The Jewish Family Services’ Exceptional Needs Case Management Program received a $10,000 grant to support funding lost for the program during the struggling economy. The program is designed to help individuals with developmental disabilities, physical challenges and chronic and persistent mental illness.
Silver Spring Neighborhood Center was awarded $12,000 to help cover costs to operate a new school formed in partnership with Banner Academy. The combination middle and high school for at-risk and behavior reassignment student’s onsite at the Center will serve 127 students this fall.
This new funding is in addition to the $70,000 in flood relief money granted as part of the United Ways Urgent Needs Fund.
