PEARLS receives grant money to support college readiness programs
Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation recently gave $35,000 in grants to the PEARLS for Teen Girls organization to support college readiness and access initiatives throughout 2010. The grants are part of the goals to increase high school graduation and college acceptance rates among the at-risk girls served by the organization in Milwaukee.
PEARLS has designed a full set of college readiness and access services. Great Lakes is providing funding for the program in addition to training and resources for the girls, their parents and PEARLS staff and volunteers. This year alone, 135 high school girls received Great Lakes resources: 31 out of 33 seniors graduated from high school and 30 out of 31 seniors were accepted to colleges across the country.

Kohler donates water conservation products to Habitat for Humanity
Kohler-based Kohler Company recently renewed its commitment to pledge an additional $1 million in water-saving products and $25,000 in funding to support Habitat for Humanity’s affordable housing work throughout the U.S. This pledge is part of an online campaign dedicated to water conservation and brings Kohler Co’s total commitment to $2 million worth of product for the organization.
"Kohler recognizes the looming freshwater shortage facing the United States, and that saving water inside the home represents the best opportunity for a family to make a significant impact on their water consumption," said John Engberg, manager of integrated communications and research at Kohler.
The campaign, SaveWaterAmerica.com, is aimed at providing education about the importance of water conservation and water-saving products. For every visitor who takes the simple three-question quiz, Kohler donates $1 in water-saving products to Habitat for Humanity’s sustainable building efforts.
"Habitat for Humanity is committed to building energy-efficient homes and conserving natural resources, not only as a matter of conserving resources but also to better serve families," said Larry Gluth, senior vice president for the U.S. and Canada at Habitat for Humanity International. "Money saved on utility costs help to make Habitat homes even more affordable."

JP Morgan Chase supports YWCA match grant
The YWCA of Greater Milwaukee recently received a $75,000 grant from JP Morgan Chase to use towards improving the FoodShare Employment and Training program at the YWCA.
“Milwaukee is our home and we want to help those that have been hard hit by this recession,” said Jim Popp, president of Chase Wisconsin and Minnesota.  “We’ve been partners with the YWCA of Greater Milwaukee and are proud to help with this important program.”
The grant will help the YWCA in its Federal Government match program focused on enhancing and providing job skills development, job search support, mail and voice mail capabilities, educational opportunities and housing assistance to Milwaukee’s homeless. 

Harley supports Harley’s Hero program for veterans

Milwaukee-based Harley-Davidson, Inc and the Harley-Davidson Foundation, Inc., have awarded a second $1 million grant to the Disabled American Veterans organization. The new grant is designated for continued funding of the organizations Mobile Service office over the next four years.
“We are proud to continue our relationship with the Disabled American Veterans and help the organization support veterans of all generations,” said Gail Lione, president of the Harley-Davidson Foundation. “Veterans have always been important members of the Harley-Davidson family and partnering with the Disabled American Veterans is an ideal way to support them and recognize their contributions to our country.”
The Mobile Service Office program increases veterans’ accessibility to benefits by literally putting service offices on the road.  Since 2007, this program dubbed Harley’s Heroes, has visited thousands of sites across the U.S. and has provided counseling and assistance in securing benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense and other government agencies.
“Harley-Davidson not only represents freedom and patriotism, the Company backs up its brand and generously supports those brave men and women whose sacrifices protect our nation,” said DAV National Adjutant and CEO Arthur Wilson. “Through the support of the Harley-Davidson Foundation, DAV representatives have visited nearly 300 dealerships across the nation on the Harley’s Heroes tour, delivering free benefits assistance to disabled veterans and their families through our Mobile Service Office program. It’s hard to put into words just how much the Harley’s Heroes program has meant to thousands of sick and wounded heroes.”
