Laurie Panella, chief information officer, leads the information technology services department at Marquette University in Milwaukee. The department is responsible for developing and implementing the university’s technology strategy and leading the IT services that support academic and administrative computing, including classroom and instructional technology, administrative systems, application development, network infrastructure, cybersecurity, data analytics, support services and telecommunications. “Laurie has been instrumental in evolving both the culture and perception of her department from a back-end office function to a strategic partner of the university,” said Joel Pogodzinski, executive vice president and chief operating officer at Marquette. Panella joined Marquette in 2019. She was instrumental in helping the university temporarily move its classes online in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Under her leadership, Marquette’s IT services has brought added sophistication and rigor to the university’s cybersecurity infrastructure amid an era of increased risk,” said Pogodzinski. “As Laurie often puts it, ‘If you build a five-story building, the cybercriminals are building a six-story ladder.’”
