Northwestern Mutual Foundation has awarded a $50,000 grant to St. Marcus Lutheran School in Milwaukee.
The grant will support two years of the school’s arts education program, including course improvements and expansion.
St. Marcus is a Milwaukee Parental Choice, college prep, K-8 school that serves mostly low-income African-American students.
The school currently teaches K3 through fourth grade art and afternoon art electives for 5th through 8th grades. The courses provide students with a broad range of experiences, including African dance and drumming, tap dance, drum line, piano, violin and hands-on art courses.
“This grant will not only allow us to sustain our program and continue to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted education for our students, but it also enables us to offer a secure and free environment for central-city students to explore, create and innovate,” said Henry Tyson, Superintendent of St. Marcus. “We’re very grateful to the Northwestern Mutual Foundation for their generosity and partnership.”
