Nordstrom to hire 375 at Mayfair store

Nordstrom Inc. today announced it will hire 375 employees to staff its new store at Mayfair mall in Wauwatosa.

The upscale fashion retailer will open the new store on Friday, October 23. The 140,000-square-foot, three-level anchor store was announced in December 2012.

The available positions include sales, housekeeping, alterations and restaurant employees, and will be posted on careers.nordstrom.com on June 22.

Nordstrom also today unveiled further detail about the new department store. It will include two in-store restaurants at the Mayfair location: a full-service Mediterranean/Italian restaurant called Ruscello that will serve pasta, sandwiches, salads and pizza; and a coffee shop called Ebar that will serve specialty drinks and snacks.

Like most Nordstrom locations, the store will include five shoe departments—three women’s, men’s and children’s. It will also include a beauty department and men’s, women’s and children’s apparel. There will be single-surface floors throughout the store and more flexible fixturing to allow for departments to change their appearance over time.

Among Nordstrom’s newer offerings are the option to buy something online and pick it up in store, and a curbside pickup service for phone or online orders. Free wi-fi is available for customers in store, and salespeople use mobile devices to complete remote check-out and search inventory for out of stock items.

“For customers, the definition of service is constantly changing and we’re just trying to keep a pulse on that and stay in touch with what the customer wants,” said Salimah Karmali, a spokesperson for Nordstrom.

The company also named Elena Mallios the store manager at Mayfair. She has worked in a variety of roles at Nordstrom’s Chicago-area stores since 1997. Mallios most recently opened and served as store manager at a Nordstrom Rack, the company’s off-price store brand, at Orchard Place in Skokie, Ill.

“Throughout her career at Nordstrom, Elena has shown the ability to perform at the highest level no matter the assignment,” said Brent Harris, vice president and Midwest regional manager for full-line stores. “We are excited that she’ll be leading the way as we break ground in Wisconsin with our first full-line store.”

“We’re thrilled to be coming to Mayfair this fall,” Mallios said. “I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know customers in the Midwest for the past 18 years, including those who have traveled from Milwaukee to shop our stores. We’re delighted to bring Milwaukee customers the same shopping experience closer to home, and we can’t wait to get our doors open to begin serving them.”

Nordstrom will host a sneak peek charity gala on Wednesday, Oct. 21 to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities Eastern Wisconsin, United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County and the Milwaukee and Cream City chapters of The Links Inc. The company hopes to raise $150,000 from the event, for which tickets are $100.

Seattle-based Nordstrom was founded as a shoe store in 1901 and now operates 304 stores in the U.S. and Canada. The company, which includes the main department store, Nordstrom Rack, Nordstrom.com and several specialty fashion sites, reported $13.1 billion in sales last year.
