The Nonprofit Center of Milwaukee has closed its operation after 32 years, the organization announced.
The Nonprofit Center provided workshops and training sessions for nonprofit organizations, and operated nonprofit jobs listing website Jobs That Serve and volunteer matching website Volunteer Milwaukee.
The center’s Volunteer Milwaukee program and Giving Tree initiative, which provided 13,000 holiday gifts annually to families in need, will be administered by United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County moving forward.
Prior to closing, the center said it served more than 400 nonprofit member organizations and more than 40 corporate members of its Business Volunteer Council.
“We are proud of the work that has been done at NPC and the impact it has had on our community,” said Raejean Kanter, former president of the Nonprofit Center’s board of directors. “If you ask the staff at your favorite nonprofit organization where they received training and support, chances are they will tell you about the Nonprofit Center of Milwaukee. And that will be our legacy.”
The center’s history traces back to the mid-1960s, when a group of spiritual leaders in the city formed Milwaukee Associates in Urban Ministry to sponsor Volunteers in Service to America projects in central city churches. The group morphed in the early 1970s into the Milwaukee Associates in Urban Development, and grew its programs to include running a resource center for other nonprofits and a neighborhood data center. It officially adopted the Nonprofit Center of Milwaukee name in 1996.
The organization said in September 2018 it planned to sell its office building at 2819 W. Highland Blvd., amid mounting financial constraints.
