New events venue proposed for vacant Third Ward site

A vacant lot on Jefferson Street in Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward could eventually house a small events venue space.

The new building is being proposed at 100 N. Jefferson St., according to a public meeting notice from the Third Ward Architectural Review Board.

Matt Jarosz, the coordinator of the review board, said the proposed building would be 9,600 square feet, and would include a mezzanine.

The applicant is Black Swan Enterprises LLC, which operates another nearby venue in the Third Ward.

Local architect Peter Renner, who owns the land, is involved in the project, Jarosz said.

Neither Renner nor Black Swan immediately responded to a request for comment.

Renner once planned a three-story, 16,000-square-foot office building for the site. He marketed the site to potential users starting around early 2019. He also owns a long, rectangular lot next door along East Summerfest Place. He pitched townhouses for that lot several years ago, but the project hasn’t moved forward.

The events venue site is located near the Milwaukee Ballet’s new Baumgartner Center for Dance, at 128 N. Jackson St., and the Warehouse No. 1 office building, at 126 N. Jackson St. Warehouse No. 1 was recently acquired by a Portland-based investor and is undergoing renovations.

The Third Ward Architectural Review Board will meet on Wednesday to hear about the plans in detail.
