A new CBD retailer opened its doors last weekend in West Allis.
Pure Golden Botanicals, located at 9100 W. National Ave., sells high-end cannabidiol (CBD) oils and infused products including edible gummies and capsules, beauty products and dog treats, said James Dean, a partner in the business.
CBD is one of several chemical compounds that are found in hemp plants. The substance is not psychoactive, so it does not have the same mind-altering effects associated with marijuana.
The store sources high-quality, premium products made with oil that is extracted from hemp plants using carbon dioxide rather than solvents, which often remain within the product, Dean said.
Dean and business partners Linda Lee and Martha Sanchez Hernandez officially created the business in December after researching the industry and searching for a storefront.
“We got into the business to improve people’s health,” Dean said.
In additional to selling CBD, Pure Golden Botanicals functions as a resources for consumers who want to learn more about hemp products and their health benefits. Shoppers are encouraged to ask questions and, Dean said, the store will soon host mini seminars that feature industry experts and hemp growers as speakers.
The retailer recently applied for an agricultural license that would would allow it to grow its own hemp plants. It would then work with a Wisconsin-based hemp supplier that would extract the CBD oil from the plants to be sold at the store, Dean said.
Wisconsin lawmakers initially approved use of CBD oil in 2013 under limited circumstances for those with seizure disorders. In 2017, the allowable uses were expanded to certain medical conditions with a certification from a doctor. Lawmakers later approved the creation of a pilot program for industrial hemp production. The Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection inspects plants grown under the program.
Pure Golden Botanicals late next month will hold a grand opening event featuring product specials and deals, informational seminars and food and beverages.
The store is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Milwaukee is now home to a handful of CBD and hemp retailers including Verdant, which opened in November in Bay View; Hemp World Cafe, which opened in December in Riverwest; and 414 Hemp at Mayfair Mall.
