MSOE unveils learning suite outfitted with Apple technology

Milwaukee School of Engineering opened a learning suite Wednesday where students will be able to take advantage of Appleā€™s newest technology. Funded by a donation from Dr. Gene P. Carter, MSOE Regent Emeritus and alumnus, the Gene Carter Apple Technologies Learning Suite will provide students direct access to iMac computers, iTouch mobile devices, iPad tablets and Apple TV digital streaming technology.

The suite design focuses on cultivating small group collaboration. The suite also features global multi-media connections that give students and faculty the ability to reach out to any location in the world via live audio and video feeds.

Students in the university’s technical communications program and Rader School of Business will apply the Apple technology in their promotions, advertising and desktop publishing classes. Software engineering students will use it for a mobile programming class.

Carter, who was a member of the original Apple Computer Inc. management team and served as vice president of sales, has supported MSOE in its initiative to keep pace with technology and computer equipment since 1989 when he created the Carter Desktop Media laboratory.

The university hosted a dedication with Carter and his wife, Patricia, on Wednesday at the suite, located on the second floor of Rosenberg Hall, 1235 N. Milwaukee Street.

“Gene Carter has led a very successful career at Apple Computer and with his own companies,” said MSOE President Hermann Viets. “We are proud to call him an MSOE alumnus. We are grateful for the continued dedication Gene and his wife, Patricia, have shown to MSOE.”
