Milwaukee-based developer David Winograd has begun construction on the former Prime Leather Furnishes Co. building in Walker’s Point.
Winograd and his partner on the project, Robert Bach, who owns P2 Development Company in Saukville, are planning 10 apartments and six street-level retail spaces in the building at 188 S. 2nd St.
A building permit was pulled in September for $945,000. Winograd expects to complete the project in about eight months.
The market-rate apartments will be 800- to 1,200-square feet. There will be a walk-out shared patio on the second floor and a fire pit and grilling stations for residents, Winograd said.
So far there has been a lot of interest in the retail space, but nothing has been secured.
“I’m hoping to see one restaurant, a couple of specialty stores and a budget haircut place,” Winograd said.
The two-story, 12,180-square-foot building was originally built in 1859 as the Mabbett and Breed’s Building.
Winograd, who owns D & K Management Services LLC., purchased the building two years ago.
Winograd also developed the South Water Works mixed-use development, south of E. Pittsburgh Avenue, in Walker’s Point and has been planning a development for the vacant site at 236 S. Water St.
