Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport was awarded a $29 million grant from the federal government as part of the coronavirus relief package known as the CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act.
The CARES Act allocated nearly $10 billion to U.S. airports, large and small, to prevent, prepare for and respond to coronavirus impacts, including support for continuing airport operations.
“This $10 billion in emergency resources will help fund the continued operations of our nation’s airports during this crisis and save workers’ jobs,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao said in a news release.
This week the FAA announced the amount of CARES Act funds that were allocated for each airport.
The largest grants to Wisconsin airports were:
- Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, $29 million
- Appleton International Airport, $15 million
- Dane County Regional Airport (Madison), $14.7 million
- Green Bay-Austin Straubel International Airport, $8 million
- Chippewa Valley Regional Airport (Eau Claire area), $6.8 million
- Central Wisconsin Airport (Mosinee), $3.9 million
- La Crosse Regional Airport, $1.8 million
- Rhinelander-Oneida County Airport, $1.1 million
