Ministry Health Care closing Mercy Medical sub-acute care unit

Milwaukee-based Ministry Health Care is closing its sub-acute care unit at Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh.

Ministry Health Care is planning layoffs that will be the equivalent of 225-250 full-time jobs as part of a system-wide reorganization.

“As part of the workforce reduction, we have made the difficult decision to close the sub-acute care unit at Mercy Medical Center,” said Ministry Health Care spokesman Geoffrey Huys. “Our last patients were admitted on June 4 and we will close the unit on June 28 after all patients have been discharged. We are working with other community resources that provide short-term rehabilitation to ensure our patients receive seamless care. The inpatient rehabilitation unit which is located on the same floor is not affected by the closing and will continue to provide rehabilitation care for our hospital patients.”

Huys was unable to say whether or not the planned layoffs will impact the employees of the sub-acute care unit, and said the job cuts will be across Ministry’s entire system of 15 hospitals and two large medical groups.

“We anticipate that many employees will find other opportunities in open positions within the system,” Huys said.
