Milwaukee celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee will host its 13th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast with presenting sponsor Harley-Davidson Motor Company at the Midwest Airlines Center on Monday, Jan. 18 from 7 to 9 a.m. Approximately 800 community and state leaders are expected to gather at the largest Martin Luther King, Jr. Day event in the state of Wisconsin.  The YMCA will also sponsor a day of service, making the King holiday a day ‘on’ instead of a day ‘off.’ A number of volunteer projects will take place in the city that day and throughout the following week. Walnut Way Conservation Corporation will be recognized with the Lincoln Gaines Award for their commitment to community development and outreach in the central city. Milwaukee Mosaic will be recognized with the Potawatomi Bingo Casino Diversity and Inclusion Award. The Milwaukee Mosaic Partnership Program pairs community leaders across race and/or ethnicity and guides them through a nine-month process of relationship development, understanding, and trust building. In addition, the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee will announce the winners of the annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Poetry Contest. Students from all over Milwaukee submitted poems based on this year’s theme: "Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’"  Winners will read their poetry during the program.
