The Medical College of Wisconsin has received a five-year, $1.9 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study chronic kidney disease and its relationship to cardiovascular diseases.
MCW will use the research to identify new treatments for chronic kidney disease patients who also suffer from cardiovascular diseases.
Dr. Alison Kriegel, assistant professor of physiology at MCW, will be the principal investigator in the research funded by the grant.
A certain condition in some chronic kidney disease patients called Cardiorenal Syndrome Type 4 causes cardiovascular problems such as enlarged heart and poor heart function, which lead to an increased risk of heart attack.
Research conducted by MCW with the grant will evaluate a specific regulatory molecule that in previous studies has been able to mitigate the growth of certain signaling proteins that cause the progression of cardiovascular disease.
