MCTS and union agree to tentative deal

The Milwaukee County Transit System announced Friday it has come to a “tentative” contract agreement with Amalgamated Transit Union Local 998.city bus inside

The three-year contract will be brought to a vote by ATU members from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, and the union’s leadership will recommend its members vote for the new version, said ATU president James Macon.

“All the stuff that we’ve been fighting for, they pretty much kind of backed down on some of it,” he said. “It’s not perfect, but it’s something that our members probably could deal with.”

ATU convinced MCTS to remove all part-time worker language from the contract, and to set the length of the contract at three years, Macon said. While working conditions were not addressed, he said most of the union’s wishes were met.

“Their last proposal was two years; We wanted three,” he said. “We didn’t want to come back in less than two years and argue about the same things.”

The negotiations between MCTS and ATU have stretched for several months, and have resulted in a work stoppage and several stalemates.
