The Milwaukee Center for Independence has proposed a $3.1 million renovation to its Bay View Campus located at 3333 S. Howell Ave.
The changes will improve delivery and accessibility of rehabilitative services for people living with physical and developmental disabilities.
“A primary purpose of the renovation is to provide a resource for people in the community and their families to more easily access clinical services, such as physical and occupational therapies,” said Howard Garber, president of MCFI. “Additional services include support for older adults who are recovering from stroke and other debilitating medical conditions.”
The project will upgrade aesthetics of the site, add green space and enhance the streetscape and will also allow MCFI to bring 45 more jobs to the location. The site was formerly the location of a Kohl’s food store.
Uihlein-Wilson Architects designed the renovation which would increase the existing space from 16,000 square feet to 20,000 square feet, as well as increasing the green space around the building.
MCFI has owned and occupied the building for the past 25 years. The project must be approved by the Milwaukee Board of Zoning and Appeals as well as the common council.
