A proposed renovation of the Milwaukee Center for Independence (MCFI) campus at 3333 S. Howell Ave., Milwaukee, will improve delivery and accessibility of rehabilitative services for people living with physical and developmental disabilities.
When completed, the $3.1 million renovation will dramatically upgrade the aesthetics of the site – originally a Kohl’s food store – adding green space and enhancing the streetscape. It will also allow MCFI to bring 45 permanent, family-supporting jobs, half of which are new, to the site.
“A primary purpose of the renovation is to provide a resource for people in the community and their families to more easily access clinical services, such as physical and occupational therapies. Additional services include support for older adults who are recovering from stroke and other debilitating medical conditions,” said Howard Garber, MCFI president.
The renovation has been designed by Uihlein-Wilson Architects. The square footage of the building would increase from about 16,000 square feet to 20,000 square feet, and green space around the building would be significantly increased.
The project must be approved by the Milwaukee Board of Zoning and Appeals and the Common Council.
