Marquette Law Poll: Clinton leads Trump in Wisconsin

First post-primary poll conducted last week

In the race for president, Hillary Clinton is leading Donald Trump in Wisconsin, according to the latest Marquette University Law School Poll released today, the first since the candidates secured their party nominations in primary voting.

Clinton held 46 percent of likely voters’ support in the poll, while Trump garnered 37 percent. Another 13 percent of voters said they wouldn’t vote for either candidate.

Among all registered voters, Clinton had 42 percent and Trump had 35 percent of respondents’ votes.

“We emphasize registered voters up until the latter part of the summer because this research has shown…the decision to vote doesn’t really firm up until late summer or early fall,” said Charles Franklin, director of the poll.

The survey, which was conducted from June 9 to 12 and included 800 registered voters statewide, had a margin of error of +/- 4 percent. It was conducted half by cell phone and half by landline, and 666 people identified as likely voters.

The Marquette University Law School Poll also found Democrat Russ Feingold led Republican incumbent Ron Johnson in the Wisconsin U.S. Senate race, 51 percent to 42 percent, among likely voters.

In the poll, 78 percent of Republicans say they are certain to vote in November, down 9 percentage points from the last poll in March, and 84 percent of Democrats say they are certain to vote in November, up 3 percentage points from March.

While one night of polling occurred after the mass shooting in Orlando Sunday, the event did not have a statistically significant impact on results, Franklin said.
