Marquette University School of Dentistry Dean William K. Lobb was recognized by the American Dental Education Association with the 2012 William J. Gies Award for Innovation as a dental educator.
Lobb was nominated by a team of university faculty members for his leadership in building Marquette’s new dental school that opened in 2002, and for developing an innovative curricular model that served as a blueprint for that building.
“Lobb provided the guidance and leadership for the construction of the first new dental school of the 21st century,” wrote Drs. Sheila Stover, Fred Sutkiewicz, and Gary Stafford, who comprised the nominating team. “Lobb advocated for a change in how dental education was to be provided to meet the needs of 21st century dental practitioners. Empowered by the trustees, faculty and students, Lobb met the challenges which resulted in a model of dental education that continues to be groundbreaking and dynamic.”
The curriculum, now in its 12th year, incorporates a comprehensive care group model, which includes early clinical experiences, integration of content and instruction, community outreach, evidence-based decision making, and a rounds education model.
