Marquette University has named Dr. Michael R. Lovell its 24th president, according to an announcement made by the university today.
Lovell has served as chancellor of UW-Milwaukee since fall 2011. At Marquette, he will succeed Interim President Robert A. Wild, who resumed the leadership position after former president Rev. Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., announced his unexpected departure last September.
Lovell is the university’s first lay president and will assume office on Aug. 1.
As a Catholic, Lovell said he is looking forward to incorporating his faith into his leadership.
“As a devout Catholic, my faith has always served as the cornerstone of my life,” Lovell said. “Having the ability to openly share my faith in my professional career is something that I have always wanted to do. I am truly humbled and excited to become part of the Marquette family at this historic moment. Working with the Jesuit community, faculty, staff, students and alumni, I believe that through its mission to serve others, Marquette can not only make a transformational impact on Milwaukee, but across the globe.”
