Marquette announces new Graduate School dean

Douglas Woods, Ph.D., will return to Milwaukee to take over Marquette University’s Graduate School as dean, according to an announcement made today by Marquette University officials.

Woods, whose appointment is effective Jan. 1, currently serves as chair and professor of psychology at Texas A&M University. Prior to working for Texas A&M, Woods was chair of psychology and associate dean for social sciences, education and business at University of Wisconsin Milwaukee’s Graduate School.

Michael Lovell, Ph.D., president of Marquette University and former chancellor of UWM, worked with Woods at UWM and in a statement referred to him as a “top performing” faculty member and an “up-and-coming administrator.”

“Based on my experience, Dr. Woods lives out Marquette’s values, and I know he has the skills to take our Graduate School to even greater heights,” Lovell said.

Woods will succeed Kevin Gibson, Ph.D., who has been filling the capacity of interim dean since January when the former dean, Jean Hossenlopp, Ph.D., became Marquette’s vice president for research and innovation.

“I’m very excited to be joining Marquette University,” Woods said. “I look forward to working with faculty, staff, students and stakeholders in graduate education to strengthen the graduate experience, provide the best opportunities for our students to acquire new research and professional skills, and to ensure that our programs, both new and yet to be created, produce graduates that are exceptionally well trained to make a difference in the diverse world they will enter.”

Woods completed a bachelor’s degree in psychology at Ohio University, a master’s degree in clinical psychology at North Dakota State University and a doctorate in clinical psychology at Western Michigan University. Professionally, he has focused on understanding and treating children and adults with Tourette syndrome, trichotillomania and other OCD-spectrum disorders.
