Operating income at the hospitality and entertainment company was $25.9 million in the quarter, up from $22.7 million in the same period a year ago.
Revenue totaled $149.2 million, up from $131.8 million in the first quarter of 2015. The increase was driven by a sharp increase in theatre concessions revenue. The Marcus Theatres division overall experienced a 20 percent increase in revenues in the first quarter, which Marcus attributed to a strong group of summer movies.
“Fiscal 2016 is off to an excellent start,” said Gregory Marcus, president and chief executive officer of The Marcus Corp. “Not only did we report record revenues for The Marcus Corp. as a whole, both divisions also achieved record revenues and operating income for the quarter. Marcus Theatres continued its momentum, outperforming the industry for the seventh consecutive quarter, while Marcus Hotels & Resorts benefited from strong cost controls and a higher average daily rate.”
