Longtime Mequon bridal boutique relocates to Walker’s Point

Owner wants to capitalize on downtown growth

Gigi Bridal Shop Inc., now known as Gigi MKE, recently opened its new storefront in Milwaukee’s Walker’s Point neighborhood after calling Mequon home for three decades.

Gigi has taken over a 2,400-square-foot space on the ground floor of a former factory building, located at 234 W. Florida St. It carries a collection of high-end wedding dresses and accessories as well as formal evening gowns and casual daywear.

The move comes a few months after owner Beverly Berson sold the 11,400-square-foot building her store shared with two other businesses.

“I didn’t want to go out of business. I love what I do. It keeps me young, it keeps me alert and I enjoy it so much,” said Berson, who has operated the business for as long as it’s been around.

As a young girl, she helped her mom open Gigi’s original storefront at North 37th Street and West North Avenue in 1959.

Sixty years later, downtown Milwaukee is changing for the better, Berson said, and she wants to be part of that.

“The energy level downtown is incredible. It’s young and it’s growing, and it’s wonderful to see Milwaukee developing that way… It’s time that Milwaukee came to fruition,” she said.

Gigi’s new location is a downsize from its previous 6,000-square-foot space, but the smaller footprint is a more modern, progressive approach to retailing, Berson said.

The store has long been known for its high-quality, high-price point evening and bridal wear, but plans for the new space include expanding its casual apparel inventory.

Gigi MKE is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Shoppers can book private appointments, but walk-ins are welcome anytime, Berson said.
