Law firm assists with document management

Kelly Twigger, owner of Milwaukee-based ESI Attorneys, knows first-hand how difficult it can be to locate documents in a traditional paper filing system, particularly when a company is forced into a litigation situation.

She founded ESI Attorneys as a way to assist clients with managing their electronically stored information (ESI) and consults them on how to best manage it before and during the litigation process.

“The rules that govern the procedures for discovery of electronic information have created a need for organizations to think about the way they organize their data and information,” Twigger said. “ESI helps companies think about how to manage that electronic information in a way suited for legal purposes.”

As e-discovery and litigation attorneys, ESI staff knows what electronic information companies should be keeping from a litigation standpoint, and can also help determine the best format for storage and saving, Twigger said.

“Ideally it would be done on a proactive level because doing this type of management in the fire drill mode can end up costing a company a lot of money,” Twigger said.

This is even more relevant for larger companies with larger litigation portfolios, she said.

Historically, there has been a disconnect between information technology people building the digital bookshelves for record storage, and the legal team familiar with the information needed if a litigation situation ensues, Twigger said.

“We are trying to bridge that disconnect and implement necessary solutions so we can save companies money in the long run,” Twigger said.
