The award was the second gold and third medal for Eastside Dark at the competition, having won in 2014 and taken second in 2013. The beer also took bronze in a similar category at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival.

Lakefront was the only Wisconsin brewery to win an award at the competition this year. A total of 39 beers from the United States were recognized.

The other winners in Eastside Dark’s category included a silver for Black Yak from Chinese brewery Shangri-la Highland Craft Brewery and a bronze for Shiner Bohemian Black Lager from Texas-based Spoetzl Brewery.

The competition included 2,103 beers from 44 countries competing in 57 categories. Described as the “Champions League of beers,” the competition features a 124 person jury and is aimed at breweries committed to traditional European-style brewing.

“To receive a gold medal recognition from the prestigious European Beer Star is a true honor for our brewery and brewmaster, Luther Paul,” said Russ Klisch, founder and president of Lakefront Brewery. “The international competition was astonishing again this year. To know we walked away with a gold medal in a German-invented category that was judged blindly by German brewmasters and entered by numerous European breweries – it’s just the best accolade we could have asked for.”
