Kohl’s January sales bounce back

Menomonee Falls-based Kohl’s Corp. today reported that its comparable store sales were up 13.3 percent in January, up 1.9 percent in the fourth quarter of the fiscal year and up 0.3 percent for the entire fiscal year.

The company reported total sales of $19.28 billion in fiscal 2012, $6.3 billion in the fourth quarter and $1.13 billion in January.

“Our January performance allowed us to accomplish our goal of clearing seasonal merchandise and we are happy with the balance and strength of our inventory across regions and categories as we enter fiscal 2013,” said Kevin Mansell, Kohl’s chairman, president and chief executive officer.

Meanwhile, The Bon-Ton Stores Inc. today reported that its comparable store sales were up 0.5 percent in the last year, and were up 1 percent in the last quarter. However comparable store sales dipped in the four weeks ended Jan. 26, down 0.4 percent.

“Throughout January and the fourth quarter, we strategically managed our inventory to drive more profitable sales and reduce the level of clearance inventory,” said Brendan Hoffman, president and chief executive officer. “This approach should benefit our fourth quarter gross margin. We will continue with this strategy as we enter the new fiscal year.”

The Bon-Ton Stores has corporate headquarters in Milwaukee and York, Pa. The company operates 271 department stores, including the Boston Store chain.
