Kohl’s, American Cancer Society partner to fund nutrition projects in Milwaukee

Eight Milwaukee area organizations are receiving grants totaling $200,000 through the Kohl’s Healthy Families program — a partnership between the American Cancer Society and Kohl’s —to support nutrition-focused projects.

Menomonee Falls-based Kohl’s Corp. recently committed $1 million to the American Cancer Society to launch new pilot programs that increase awareness of healthy food choices in clinic, school and faith-based settings, and improve access to cancer screenings and treatment in the Milwaukee area.

The initiatives include cooking classes, gardening lessons and field trips to local farmers, among others. The goal is to help participants learn where they can access healthy foods in their community.

The American Cancer Society hopes to reach nearly 3,000 individuals through the projects.

“Where we live, work, learn, and play has a major influence on what we eat and our ability to be physically active,” said Laurie Bertrand, executive director of the American Cancer Society in Wisconsin. “We’re excited about partnering with these organizations and furthering their efforts to help Milwaukee families make healthy food choices and access healthy foods.”
