Kohler Co. recalling generators for shock risk

Wiring error prompts voluntary action

Kohler Power Systems, a division of Kohler-based Kohler Co., is voluntarily recalling more than 7,000 generators because a wiring error can result in electrical shock when items are plugged into it.

No incidents have been reported, but consumers are advised to stop using the unit and contact Kohler to schedule a repair. The recall is being done in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada.

The recall includes Kohler portable generator models PRO3.7, PRO3.7E, PRO5.2, PRO5.2E and GEN5.0-3003 sold between June 2014 and May 2016.

The units retailed for between $740 and $1,400 and were sold at Kohler distributors and dealers nationwide. About 7,000 were sold in the United States and another 230 were sold in Canada.

The units were manufactured by Sumec Machinery & Electric Co. Ltd. of China.

All affected models have a serial number at or below 4528733735 and a manufacture date code prior to 06 2016. The model numbers, serial numbers and manufacturing date codes are listed on a silver label placed on each generator on the lower black frame assembly.
