Joy Global donates more than $1M, 5,000 volunteer hours to Milwaukee Habitat

Milwaukee-based Joy Global Inc. has passed the $1 million giving mark to Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity, the community announced on Friday.

Hand in hand with that milestone, Joy Global employees will exceed 5,000 volunteer hours to the nonprofit organization this week.

Joy Global has been an active supporter of Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity since 2011 with a focus on helping revitalize the city’s Washington Park neighborhood, which is located near the company’s National Avenue facility.

“We want the work we do in the community to contribute to the safety and vitality of the neighborhoods that surround us, and we are encouraged by the preliminary results of Habitat’s focus on Washington Park,” Jeff Schmaling, president, Americas North for Joy Global, said in a statement.

Joy Global’s employees have backed the development of 13 homes in the neighborhood and this week will frame two new homes.

The company, a mining equipment and services provider, also runs an annual workplace giving campaign and a supplier golf tournament to benefit Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity. Through the 2015 tournament, held Aug. 24 in Hartland, Joy Global raised more than $84,000.

Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity works to build affordable housing for community residents in need. Since it was established in 1984, the organization has constructed more than 550 houses and restored more than 250 homes in the City of Milwaukee.
