Journey House lands $1 million donation

The Burke Foundation pledged a $1 million contribution to the Journey House capital campaign, "Breaking New Ground for Families and Youth; A Campaign for the Future." "This $1 million investment is a substantial step towards achieving a partnership that can make the most significant stride in increased student performance, economic development and revitalization of the neighborhood," said Dr. Michele Bria, Journey House executive director.

The gift honors the memory of Burke Foundation originator Richard "Dick" Burke, who passed away in March, 2008.  Burke was an advocate for urban education and donated tens of millions of dollars to education and community organizations in the Milwaukee area.

The Burke gift is the largest single investment Journey House has received toward its $5.95 million campaign goal.

The project includes the construction of a multipurpose facility to be built as an addition to Longfellow Elementary School. Journey House has entered into a formal agreement with Longfellow School, of Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS), to share educational classrooms, meeting and program space, and a youth gymnasium at the new combined facility.

"Our capital campaign moves forward in tribute to the memory and vision of Dick Burke and the Burke Foundation," said Greg Herrle, Journey House board chair.
