José A. Olivieri, a partner in Michael Best & Friedrich LLP’s Labor and Employment Relations Practice Group, has received the 2016 Executive Leadership Award from the Hispanic Professionals of Greater Milwaukee (HPGM). Since 2003, HPGM’s leadership awards have honored individuals of Hispanic heritage who have exhibited leadership, achievement, and responsibility, in the field of diversity.
In his nearly 35 years with Michael Best, Olivieri has demonstrated outstanding vision and leadership, both within the firm and the local community. A pioneering leader in the firm, Olivieri is founder of the Immigration and International Migration practice, current leader of the Higher Education Industry Group, and former Chair of the Labor and Employment Relations Practice Group.
Olivieri applies an inextinguishable energy not only to his legal practice, but also to his community outreach efforts, including serving as President of the United Community Center’s (UCC) Board of Directors. In his 15 year tenure, the UCC has grown to a $20 million organization with more than 300 employees, a school with over 1,200 enrolled students, elder programs and housing, and many fitness, health, and human services programs.
Beyond his active work with UCC, Olivieri is Chair of the Board of Trustees of Carroll University, his alma mater. He is also a founding member and past president of the Wisconsin Hispanic Lawyers Association, past Chair of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, past Chair of the City of Milwaukee Library Foundation, a board member of the Equal Justice Campaign, and a past board member of Legal Action Wisconsin. A staunch supporter of education, Olivieri has served as general counsel to numerous colleges and universities, focusing on matters ranging from Title IX to contract review and governance.
Olivieri, along with all 2016 leadership award recipients, will be honored at the HPGM Annual Meeting on August 19, 2016, at the Pfister Hotel in downtown Milwaukee.
